Ste. Genevieve Vacation, Part 2
It's been over a week since we got home from our vacation and I'm still thinking about it. I'll save my favorite part for last but I won't even be mad if you scroll past the other parts and just read that.
Ste. Genevieve is a cute little place and we spent a good amount of time just exploring. We tried a couple coffee shops, some boutiques, a cigar shop, and some restaurants. Our favorite coffee shop was Common Grounds and our favorite restaurant was The Anvil. You want a tasty, cheap ribeye? The Anvil's your place!
Near Ste. Genevieve is a fascinating place with some crazy geographical history. Kaskaskia, IL was home to 7,000 people at its peak in the middle of the 18th century and eventually became the capital of Illinois. In 1881 the town was destroyed by major flooding and the Mississippi moved, cutting Kaskaskia off from the rest of Illinois. Now it's just a true middle-of-nowhere spot. A few buildings in the middle of cornfield. Quiet and beautiful. The church there is no longer used but it's perfectly maintained.

Now. My favorite part.
We've been to Ste. Genevieve before, but just very briefly. We stayed at a very cute but a little pricey AirBnb and spent one afternoon exploring. We came across a big antique mall at the edge of town and got to talking to the proprietor, Patrick who we learned also owned a bed and breakfast and assured us that it would be a better deal than what we paid at our Airbnb. We booked a couple nights at his place, the Main Street Bed & Breakfast. This was our first experience with a bed & breakfast so we didn't know what to expect but we really enjoyed our time there. When we arrived Patrick gave us a tour of the whole place and told us its history. Our room was enormous with tall ceilings and comfy furniture. In the evenings Patrick served us some wine and cheese on the patio and the mornings he made us wonderfully huge breakfasts. We even made some friends who were also staying there. I find myself missing the place and we hope to go back. My favorite part? Barney, the official welcomer, food tester, and snuggler.
